I don't know if anyone's noticed this, but typing an exclamation mark at the end of a sentence (in my opinion) seems to make the entire phrase appear extremely sarcastic.
Is this just me?

Examples include:
  • Okay!
  • I don't hate you!
  • Thanks!
  • Lol!
  • I'm not a serial killer!
And the list goes on.
Personally, I only use an exclamation mark when thanking someone. I feel as if it makes things seem more cheery and friendly.

Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

It really depends on the situation you use it in. Just have common sense and you can usually tell when someone is being sarcastic or not.

As JDusk said, it depends on the state in which it is said.

Exclamation Mark:
The exclamation mark or exclamation point is a punctuation mark usually used after an interjection or exclamation to indicate strong feelings or high volume (shouting), and often marks the end of a sentence.

I wouldn't necessarily say that it makes the phrase sound more happy and cheery, but it's more of an attempt to further convey a message. Saying "I'm not a serial killer." is not as believable as saying "I'm not a serial killer!" because you're putting more emotion into it.

This is why I hate sarcasm, it's so tough to make out and it slows people's conversations and on the internet, you can almost never tell.
