1. Okay, like everyone else said, have a set route to follow.
2. Like ChocolateNanner said, jump and sprint.
3. DO NOT play with a trackpad if you are on a laptop, always play with a mouse. And the better the mouse the better for you, I recently got a gaming mouse and my kills have gone up significantly in every game I play over using a trackpad or cheapo wireless mouse that I have.
4. Play mind games with your opponents, make them think that you have better stuff than them, I managed to get a bow (no arrows), and a bit of armor early on. Almost all of my enemies attempted to avoid me, then I hunted them down and killed them using only fists because they kept trying to run.
5. Try and get to the cornucopia, there isn't a very large bloodbath. If you get a sword from it, GO AFTER OTHERS. Kill other people who went for the corn. Odds are that they got like a piece of bread, a porkchop, and a diamond. Kill 2+ people who got drops like this, and you have yourself a diamond sword and a supply of food.
6. When in danger, run. Don't let your health go below 4 hearts in any fight other than the deathmatch.
7. Use flint and steel as a tool to assist you to flee. Light a fire directly behind you while running and under your attackers feet will help you run, most players freak out when fire is spawned around them. (as they should be!)
8. Again with ChocolateNanner, don't form alliances unless talking to them. It's stupid, and they will backstab you.
9. Don't bully players. Not even through chat! You can bully through actions, don't attempt to take on another player in a lasting fistfight or chase (in early game) let them escape in a chase if it drags on, it's gonna pull you to another part of the map and you are gonna be in deep trouble, especially if they make it to a chest and get a sword.

If you just keep playing, you eventually develop chest routes. If your route tends to be popularly taken, either 1) get a new one or 2) skip the cornucopia and head straight for it. An example of that would be the boat on map 1. On map 2, I have a great route that can get 6+ chests in the first 5 or so minutes. It's surprisingly unrecognised by most people. On map 3, it's hard to learn which leads where, but there's a certain tunnel that leads out to a little opening where there are lots of chests. Map 4, big boat all the way!

I also recommend making sure you go to the cornucopia a few minutes before chests refill to make sure nobody else does, EVEN IF YOU DON'T HAVE GOOD STUFF. There's nothing worse than skipping going there because "people with better stuff would be there". That just makes your situation even worse. Get to the cornucopia, and defend it as if your life depends on it (or at least your Minecraft life.)
