Can't type nor see the chat but can see everything else?

I joined a server this arvo and tried to type hey to my mate who was in, I pressed 't' then proceeded to type"Hey man" but on the 'e' it opened my inventory and I realized that I couldn't see the chat. I can see everything else like my hunger bar and health bar, but I can't type anything and my keyboard works fine. BTW if I see you in a game and am like "*nothing*" then you know. PLEASE HELP!

Have you tried restarting your Minecraft? Computer? Can you talk on single player? Can you talk on other servers? Have you tried opening chat with '/' instead of 't' then erasing the / and proceeding to type normally? Have you installed any mods recently?

I can't type in Single Player, not on other servers, and apart from my Optifine nothing recently. I have restarted minecraft and laptop lots, nothings working ;(

1. Press escape in MC.
2. Click "Options".
3. Go to "Multiplayer Settings.

You should see something like "Chat only" or "Commands Only". Set it to "All" or something.

But I'm assuming your keyboard words fine considering you typed this. Have you tried the / method?
Try going to Option > Multiplayer setting > Chat: (should say) Shown.
Check your controls to make sure you're pressing the right button to open chat (it's usually T, but might not be). Is anything red?
If that doesn't work, you may have to update your java or reinstall Minecraft.
