What if he just doesn't want to play with other mods? I usually leave a game once I see a moderator, because usually that means I have to team with them. I don't really like playing with other mods because many of the mods are a little noobish. In gravey4rds case, these mods are far from consideration of being #1. Not to mention that he's more likely to get targeted because a normal player would think like this:
"Two mods in a game... that must mean they're teamed! So in order to win, I need to take out one of the mods early, so that I can have a fair fight later in the game!"
There's a 50% chance that the player will go after you; and with a #1 tag on the leaderboards, that percentage skyrockets. It's very unfair to say that the reason he leaves is because he doesn't want to face anyone. As you can see, there are many other plausible causes for why he leaves when you join a game.
