This is exactly right ^ Without running 64bit java on a 64bit OS, you can't dedicate more than 1Gig. But be careful, allocating more RAM than your PC can handle will slow down you Minecraft.I had that issue, I'm pretty sure that to allocate more RAM than 1.5 you need 64 bit java which does not come by default. Download it from here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jre7-downloads-1880261.html click Wwindows 64 and then run the program, it should overwrite the previous one. Hope this helped because it seemed to work for me.

Not to mention, 512x is hard to run unless you have a really good computer.
I had to remove all java files before the 64bit worked.
