Get in-game (any server) and change the texture there. That worked for me, also I would suggest not using faithful 64x64 as the problem will persist without Optifine or MCPatcher.
There are lots of problems but answers too:
1.You might be using Forge with Faithful Pack. Forge isn't really going to "work" with Faithful Pack. It spaces the font.
2. You might be using a 1.6.2-not-patched texture pack. Try converting it with a tool.
This happened to me too. All I did was go into the resource pack folder, go to "font", And delete it. This makes it so there is no HD font, but at least you can still use the texture pack.
