Optifine may give an FPS advantage, however isn't that like saying people with more money to buy a better computer have an unfair advantage as well? We can't really ban people for having an FPS advantage because of all the different factors surrounding it. Editing gamma however does not give an FPS advantage, it gives an extremely unfair visual advantage. They're two completely separate things. :p
I agreed with you, by giving the example that my monitor gives me an unfair advantage, that could be nullified if increasing gamma was aloud.

The way I see it gamma and optifine are the same thing. Optifine is used to help people with laggy computers get better fps, so they can match players with good computers. Increasing gamma helps players with dim monitors be able to actually see, so they can match players with bright monitors.

Banning Optifine would make a lot of players that rely on it angry. I'm quite sure that people that don't know how to install mods such as optifine (Like myself when I first got it) search it up on Youtube, so that really shouldn't be a problem.

FPS advantage as said before isn't preventable as people have different computers and it fluxuates depending on what computer you own/use.
Well searching how to increase gamma is just as easy as searching how to install optifine, except gamma is easier. Also see my post replying to Linkdude1997, as I said how it gives an advantage with seeing nametags and such ect easier. I do agree with banning optifine would anger many users.

Increasing gamma and installing optifine are two completely different things. Increasing your gamma gives an unnatural brightness to Minecraft that a monitor could not give. Boosting your gamma is basically like using the hack FullBright, and thus, is a bannable offense.

Well optifine zooming gives an un-natural "line of sight" I guess you could say, as I said how zooming can see nametags from so much farther away. I honestly think optifine and changing gamma settings is kind of even, IMO

Gamma can ruin some aspects of PvP as some maps use dark spaces for "effect" and if someone can see perfectly appose to a person who can barely see anything, it gives a the person with the increased gamma a huge advantage. An example would be MoonBase 9. Often times I play with a teammate and I can barely tell if it's him or an enemy due to the darkness, on the other hand increasing your gamma gives you an advantage as you can easily see who is coming at you. Another scenario is seeing people at a distance in Moon Base 9, if I had an increased gamma I could easily see the player from a distance but he wouldn't be able to see me until I attack him as I appear to be just a black figure that is hard to differentiate as it is dark.

Yes, they are completely different things. Increasing gamma is easier. And while we're on the topic, has there ever been any thought to allow fullbright? It's benefits are as slim and just help players with dim monitors. Other servers already allow fullbright, including the most popular server network in minecraft.

As I just finished saying to Brandon, increasing gamma gives an extremely unnatural brightness to minecraft that even the brightest monitor could not duplicate. Monitor brightness and gamma are two completely separate types of brightness. Increasing monitor brightness is fine, because it's not giving an effect like gamma does. Gamma is equivalent to having FullBright, which is indeed bannable. :p

My monitor brightness settings allow me to increase my brightness, and be able to see perfectly fine on Moonbase 9. Increased gamma would do the same for people with dim and old monitors.

I don't know what monitor you're using but no monitor in my life that I've seen can duplicate the effect of full bright, and again not everyone has the same monitor as you.

Fullbright allows you to see everything, in whatever lighting condition, correct? If I turn my monitor brightness up, I have no trouble seeing anything.
