It needs some work. It would be hard, just like an underground map would, in a way that mobs can always spawn. Ghasts would be really annoying because they can find you from far away and shoot you, so unless you have a bow you stand no chance.

Kitty, did you read the books? There are all sorts of arena's. Snow, Desert, Forrest, water and way more.

Yeah Stijn is right. It's a great idea, and as Stijn said it can use the same blocks but placed/we/vs above ground.

You could generate a nice Nether, then copy DIM-1 over Region and build from there.
